\nSubject: [01v96] My first experiences
\n
\n
\n> I'm a happy owner since of a 01V96 for about a week now, after
\n> lurking on this group for a while, and I thought I should share my
\n> experiences.
\n>
\n> Generally there are no big surprises, since I read the manual, and I
\n> installed the StudioManager app before I bought the V. It's an
\n> incredibly complete mixer, there seem to be no limits.
\n>
\n> What is not very practical here, is that the phones and monitor out
\n> share the same ADC, I would have liked to be able to get a solo on my
\n> phones, while getting the mix on my monitors, while keeping the
\n> possibility to listen to (the same) solo on my monitors. Could be
\n> solved with a switchbox/attenuator between stereo out, monitor out,
\n> and the inputs of my monitors.
\n>
\n
\nYou must mean DAC on output. They share the same 2 DAC's. Try solo'ing channels in RECORDING solo
\nmode. DIO/SETUP F2 MONITOR page, and listening to stereo buss on phones. If that doesn't get you the
\nresults that you want, you can always run monitors off of the omni's, using the auxs for monitor mix
\nand the phones for the stereo buss.
\n
\n> The biggest surprise was that my unit hums. Not on its outputs, but
\n> physically, probably the power transformer inside. Not very loud, it
\n> would go unnoticed in live usage, but the sound of my computer does
\n> not fully mask it out. I'll try to exchange it with a different unit.
\n> Does somebody else hear this hum?
\n>
\n
\nMines dead quiet. It's also dead quiet with master and channel faders on, running nominal levels
\n(max) to a 2000 watt monitor amp set wide open (max).
\n
\n
\n> Here are just a couple of areas that could get some improvement:
\n>
\n> * StudioManager GUI: seems to be perfectly functional and useful, but
\n> the GUI seems to behave a bit strange. (I'm using win2k).
\n> - There is a small scrollbar in the upper-right corner of the main
\n> screen, which shouldn't be there.
\n
\nSM could definitely be improved, I'm glad that the board can be run completely without it, but it
\ncomes in handy for archiving patches and scenes and changing recording track routes without having
\nto change mic inputs. It's like a digital patchbay. I don't see a small scrollbar in the upper right
\ncorner of the main screen on mine, but as soon as I open SM, I get double scroll bars at the bottom
\nand on the right. I double click on the blue bar at top that says StudioManager for 01v96: That
\nresizes the window, I than double click again to go full screen again and than I get the normal
\nscroll bars at bottom and right side. See if that gets your screen back to normal. I think Yammy was
\ninformed of this and a few other SM things along with the MIDI Window always being on top.
\n
\n> - It's possible to resize the main screen beyond usefullness. Size
\n> should be limited to the maximum used size.
\n> - This MIDI SETUP toolbar, should not be a toolbar, but a menu-item.
\n> And it certainly not stay on top of every other window (even from
\n> other applications).
\n
\nDefinetly, this is supposed to be addressed in the SM update when it comes out. IIRC, the r96 and
\nD2k's SM just got their updates or soon will and the D1k and v96 are in the making.
\n
\n> - The first item in each menu seems to get autoselected when moving
\n> from one menu to the other.
\n
\nGo to Preferences DIO/SETUP F3 Prefer 1 tab and enable Auto Channel Select. Anytime you touch a
\nfader on the board, it will Select that channel when SM is in Selected Channel view.
\n
\n> - The "selected channel" wants to stay on top of the main window,
\n> which is a little annoying.
\n
\nYes, I would like to see a Minimize button on the Selected Channel as it stays on top. I can resize
\nthe Sel Ch view and the faders view and work with them side by side though. They share the monitor
\nscreen half way each. It's a compromise I guess to having some weak window functions. Also I think
\nthat Yammy should incorporate the mouse scroll wheel for not only scrolling but setting parameter
\nvalues, much like the Parameter Wheel. The cursor on top of virtual knobs leads much to be desired
\nwhen trying to dial in dB's in 10th's or other values. Its too clunky and prone to over and
\nundershoot. A more precise way of dialing in minute value changes is at the top of my list. It can
\nbe done by incorporating the scroll wheel on the mouse, IMHO. They should also incorporate right
\nclick menu's. Yammy didn't seem to research the other DAW progs for tricks, nor consult DAW jockey's
\nwhen they designed SM for PC.
\n
\n> - A dedicated meter bridge window would be usefull to replace a
\n> hardware meter bridge, while not occupying a lot of screenspace.
\n>
\n
\nYep, that would be nice, I'd like to see a full screen meter page for channels 1-32, just like the
\nhardware display screen with 16 meters on top and 16 on the bottom. I like stacked meter bridges,
\nbecause you can view every channel at once, a virtual one in SM would be dandy and allow nice large
\nmeters, larger than a typical real meter bridge on smaller consoles. As it stands now the meters in
\nSM are not resizeable and are only 2 inches in heigth. Good DAW progs have resizeable meters.
\n
\n> * Midi through (DIO/setup -> MIDI/Host)
\n> If I understood correctly this feature allows to route one midi input
\n> to one midi output. So the 'regular' midi out could be used as a PC
\n> midi port through USB. But why only for one port, in one direction? A
\n> second routing entry would be usefull for me to use the V as a 1-in 1-
\n> out PC midi interface too.
\n>
\n> * DeEssing / compressor keyin
\n> The gates have a selectable key input, but the compressors do not.
\n> While a sidechain input is a common feature on analog compressors,
\n> and is often used with an EQ to de-ess voices. Why?
\n>
\n
\nGot me, the comps on the old V have key in, doesn't make sense that they would take them out on the
\nnew V. Probably a workaround for this somewhere, like splitting the signal to two busses and
\ndeessing the old fashioned way. Zand wrote an article about de-essing on the AW4416, I'll see if I
\ncan locate it.
