\n\n\n\n\nHi all,
I'm about to make some major upgrades to my home \n studio setup and am
looking at the 01v96 digital mixer as a replacement \n for my old Yamaha
MX12/4 analogue mixer.\n\n\nI almost nulled your \n membership, thinking that spoony21male was a porn spammer, glad that I had \n second thoughts. If you have problems posting on some groups, it's likely the \n ID that you have assigned yourself is confusing the \n moderator.\n\n
Before I found out about the 01v96 I was thinking of getting an \n FMR
RNC 1773 compressor for compressing mic inputs.
Can someone \n tell me if the built in compressor functions on the 01v96
are in the same \n league as an external compressor?Yes and better than most analog \n compressors. Be aware that the internal compressors will not prevent overs at \n the ADC's (analog to digital converter) because they are after the ADC's, you \n would still need the RNC if you are wanting to limit overs while tracking. \n However, with 24 bit recording, you simply do not need to limit tracking \n channels, because you have so much headroom. Just back off on the input gain \n at the ADC and make it up, once the signal is digitized and being mixed down. \n You'll have more control with dynamic processing on vocals and bass guitar \n after you record low through the ADC's. You'll be obtaining the full dynamics \n of the instrument or vox and limiting or comping before the ADC's puts you at \n more risk for retakes, than just simply backing off on the gain. No need to \n max the bits out at 24 bit these days. \n\n\n
I'm currently using paired Shure SM58 mics for recording vocals \n and
guitars but am thinking of upgrading to a Rode NT2000 mic.\n\nI've had great results \n with the Rode mics, very good choice. Haven't auditioned the NT2000 yet, but \n the variable pattern, pad and rolloff looks very promising and I expect other \n mic manufacturer's to follow suite in the \n future.\nI'm also planning to run the digital output of the 01v96 \n into my
creative audigy2 platinum ex digital input at 24bit/96KHz using an \n
optical cable. Is this possible (the soundcard supports it)?\n\n\nYou can't use an \n optical SPdif cable as the v96 has rca coax SPdif, however they make opt to \n rca converters like the Fostex COP and also the ADAT interface on the \n MY8-AT or MY16-AT will transfer 96k in dual channel mode. The way this works \n is ADAT and most of the common digi transfer formats, with the exception of \n single wire AES, max out at 48k, so to send 96k signals it splits the \n samples so that sample number one exits one opt channel and the next exits the \n adjacent channel, than it alternates all of the samples for the length of the \n audio. You'll get 96k on two tracks in a typical 96k recorder, when going \n ADAT, SPdif or Tdif at 96k. This isn't a limit of the v96 as \n it will operate all 40 channels at 96k and also input the annie \n signal via all of the AD's at 96k, but a limit of the tranfer format that \n you are exiting the board with.\n
I'm completely new to \n digital mixers so any advice from you experts
would be greatly \n appreciated.\nExpect an intense \n learning curve when going from annie mixing to digital mixing, it's a \n different ballpark, but have no fear, we've all gone through it ourselves and \n are here to help you make the leap into digital consoles. Leap is the correct \n word. You'll likely never go back to annie, once you learn how to make digi \n sound as warm as annie. It just takes time, the v96 is as comprehensive as any \n big board that I've operated be it annie or digi and the sonics \n are excellent, that rival annie boards that cost into the 6 \n figures.\n\nWelcome to the 01v96 List, \n David.\nKeep On \n Trackin'\n\n------Ronny Morris - Digitak \n Mastering------\n
