\n They call it a 5.1 mixer because it can do 5.1, you probably have the 4 cursor buttons acting as
\nthe joystick and you can log into the automix rotation panning from there. But any 8 buss mixer can
\nmix 5.1 or 7.1, using groups and the 8 buss master section. To me you have to have rotation
\ncapabilities to call it a surround board exclusively, though.
\n From the mastering board, I was under the impression that most of the full time DVD for audio
\nstudios use hardware with joysticks. IIRC, SSL Axiom and I've heard Sony Oxford maybe Oxnard, I
\ncan't remember. The DM2000 is designed for DVD and both it and the new 02r have joysticks. Surround
\nis the main reason for a joystick. Pretty neat to mess around with, when it coordinates with drum
\nroll arounds. The 02r went 5.1 with version 2 upgrade. No joystick until 02r96, but that's the main
\nreason for a joystick. You won't find them on non surround boards very often. Yammy adding one on
\nthe new version and it being 96k, I'd say that Yammy is getting into DVD rather seriously. Elliot
\nShiner's using a DM2000 (yammy ads) and I've seen some rap groups using one. That's all we need 6
\ndamn speakers of rap. :O)
\n I think it's Skywalker Sound that has 256 channels on an SSL9000J main frame with complete
\nautomation. The board looks like it's about 40 feet wide and takes 3 guys to run it. I would think
\nthat they are mixing their 7.1 sound tracks on it, probably the 5.1 DVD movies as well. I don't know
\nhow many DAW's can support 250 tracks running at 96k, but a Harrison Digital Engine can handle up to
\n700. It's not a DAW but an array of drives with a shitpile of Analog and AES/EBU I/O's. I saw one in
\na trade mag one time and it was a large room full of HD-R's, housed in non portable metal racks.
\nIncredible. The patchbay looked like a wall. :O)
