Hi folks-
First off, \n many, many thanks to you for responding so quickly
and with *real* info to \n my question about V vs. DM-24. I wish
there was a similar place to \n find info from DM-24 users, but
unfortunately Tascam ran the DM-24 forum \n and recently ended
all their forums (despite the fact that the DM-24 forum \n in
particular was praised not only by users, but also by \n *Mix*
magazine---this does not speak well of Tascam).
You folks have \n me much more hesitant about the Tascam; in fact
I gave up on it until \n encountering a Nashville musician I
really respect (cellist John Catchings) \n who is a new DM owner
and loves it. It seems the DM-24 community \n divides in 2, with
half really loving it and half not liking it. My \n impression
is that the ones who like it are the recent customers, \n making
me wonder if either (1) there was a bad production run, and \n the
problem is sorted out; or (2) they haven't used it long enough
to \n see the bugs! 8-) I haven't been able to figure which is
true, \n but John assures me there are DM-24 users through Nashville
who are \n thrilled with that board.
So, you've almost succeeded in dissuading me \n from the DM, but
I haven't been thrilled with what I'm learning about the \n V.
In particular, what I thought were parameter pots under the
main \n screen (from the small photos I originally saw) I came
to find were just \n buttons---there are no parameter knobs.
I've spent some time with the \n manual, and see lots of screens
with plenty of virtual knobs on them. \n It seems to me that
having to scroll horizontally *and* vertically to each \n knob
to be able to adjust the parameters with the single data wheel
is a \n highly suboptimal way to work. I need to spend more time
in the \n manual---have I missed something (e.g. can one map a row
of knobs to \n faders)? I'm looking for a "triple threat"
board (recording, live \n sound, DAW control surface) so I can
get rid of my analog 4-bus mixer (to \n fund it), and the V user
interface looks clumsy to me, esp. for live \n work. Other boards
at this price range have parameter knobs, though \n have other
compromises. This, combined with the lack of dedicated \n
transport controls and a number pad (for quick scene or
macro recalls) \n is making me hesitate about the V.
I guess every board has its \n compromises, and at some point
I'll just have to bite the bullet and work \n with what I can
get at the $2k+ price point. But if any of you can \n speak
from experience to these user interface concerns (esp. if
you come \n from an analog board background, or another digital
board with knobs, \n transport, etc.) I'd appreciate hearing
from you. Did this stuff \n drive you nuts at first, but turn
out to be no big deal? Are you \n still frustrated with parts
of the UI?
Finally, those of you using \n the V as a DAW front end, is
there a particular card that works well with \n it? Or just
anything with ADAT lightpipe? Is there an \n affordable
Firewire i/f that would let me use it also with my laptop? \n
(The DM-24 has a Firewire card coming out
after the New Year that will \n provide 24 channels of i/o
for just $350---it's another thing luring me to \n reconsider
the DM).
Thanks,
Tom
