\nSubject: [01v96] Firewire/mLAN anyone?
\n
\n
\n> I found a post in the archives where Ronny wrote to stay away from
\n> mLAN, which looks like good advice, but I wanted to double-check. It
\n> just seems like $500 is a lot to pay for a card that only gives you 8
\n> channels of 48 kHz I/O. Am I missing something, or is mLAN just not
\n> really "there" yet?
\n>
\n
\nSince that discussion, Dave Shirk and someone else had gotten mlan to work successfully.
\n
\n> On a related note, I was considering mLAN because I'd love to be able
\n> to walk up to any computer with firewire, load some software on it,
\n> plug in and go. The catch is that I'd like to be able to do 96kHz
\n> recording with as many channels as is feasible.
\n>
\n> It looks like the best way for me to do it is to get a MOTU 828 MkII
\n> interface (which connects 8 ch ADAT and 8 analog to firewire
\n> directly, no MOTU card needed), run S/MUX ADAT for four channels of
\n> 96kHz, and then take inserts from another 8 channels and use the
\n> analog I/O of the 828 for a grand total of 12 channels at 96 kHz.
\n> Does that sound dumb to anyone?
\n>
\n
\nIf you are going to a PC, I'd recommend an RME card. My partner in Texas has had all kinds of troube
\nwith his 828. Sent it back 3 times in a short time. Other reviews on the net are spotted, some
\npraise it, some condemn it.
\n
\n> Also, has anyone done real-time recording with a firewire drive like
\n> the Glyph drives? Glyph of course claims that they have performance
\n> to spare for multi-channel recording right to the drive, but I can't
\n> help but be skeptical. Anyone?
\n>
\n> Now that I'm on the subject, all this is a plan for a mobile
\n> recording rig. I notice that Ronny is a fan of the Fostex D-2424.
\n> Suppose you've recorded several tracks of a show onto the Fostex, but
\n> you want to do mixdown on a DAW. How would you transfer all the data?
\n> Do you send it through ADAT Litepipe in real time to like a
\n> Hammerfall or something? Or is there an easier way?
\n
\nCan't get any easier than using a Hammerfall. I'm using an 01v96 and D2424 for live remotes
\nincluding that fiasco last night. :O) Now if the other peoples gear worked half as good as the V-D
\ncombination, I would have been able to take 5 minutes off to go take a leak. :O) I transfer back and
\nforth between the D and the RME. Doing the live recording using the 01v96 as front end to the D2424,
\nback at studio transfer tracks to DAW via RME 9652, doing editing on the DAW, transfer edited tracks
\nback to the D via RME, for mixdown to the DAW via RME SPdif. Master the two track mix in DAW and
\nburn PMCD on Plextor.
\n
\nI strongly recommend a dedicated to audio only, stand alone hard disk recorder, for doing live
\nrecordings and not a PC/MAC DAW based multi-tracker. You only have one take and system reliability
\nis the main issue.
\n
\nI've been using the Fos D's for almost 8 years now and have never lost a track due to the recorder.
\n
\nKeep On Trackin'
