I'm guessing the game oriented situations I suggested are not \n going to be true 7.1. It's possible the audiophile people that are pushing the \n envelope on 7.1 are not actualy using 7.1 either.\n\nI have deleted most of the mail now, but I \n understood <real> 7.1 to be Center, centerR, centerL, Right, Left, SurR, \n SurL, LFE. It seems I recall someone mentioning a different 7.1 \n setup.\n\nSo I stand corrected. If no one is mixing 7.1 \n then obiviously no one is playing it back. But M-Audio, Rotel, Cary($$$) are \n manufacturing 7.1 systems. How they are implememted, I don't \nknow.\n\nI find all this very interesting and as always \n really appreciate your efforts to keep serious hobbiest like myself and pros \n alike informed. I really do think 5.1 is here to stay. I have built a nice \n stereo palyback system. All tube, all hand built. Even the transformers are \n hand wound. DVD's come across with a <lot> of emotion. I would \n love to build it out to 5.1 and like you said, be sitting in the middle of the \n sound.\n\n\n10-4\n\nTB\nPS\n\nBreak out the longjohns. We're having a zero wind \n chill Fri morning. Looks like the price of Fla OJ might go up next year. Looks \n like the jetstream was dipping down below your neck of the woods into the \n panhandle.\n\n\n----- Original Message -----\nFrom: \n Ronny Morris \n\n \nSent: Wednesday, January 22, 2003 4:44 \n PM\nSubject: [01v96] 5.1 - 7.1\n\nJust a follow up in relation to our 7.1 \n discussions.\n\nAfter asking the 1300 mastering board member ME's, \n if anyone is doing 7.1 or know anyone that's working that format. I got one \n reply from Dave Davis at QCA 5.1, he says that he doesn't know any 7.1 \n engineers, nor a living room that has it.\nJay Frigoletto, a 5.1 engineer that does a lot of \n Warner's DVD releases, says there are a couple of 7.1 engineers in LA. They \n pretty much mirror what I've already said, but these are from the guys that \n write the books on surround issues.\nThis just came in from Bobby \n Owsinski.\n\n\n\n \n

Ronny,
7.1 is a theatrical release-only format at this \n time (also known as
SDDS), and only found in a limited number of \n theaters at that. I
would bet that you will see 6.1 (with a center rear \n channel) long
before you'll ever see anything in the current 7.1 format, \n which has
two additional center speakers. There's been some speculation \n that
the format was conjured up as a way to get more SPL to fill very \n
large theaters.
