Look at it this way. Electricity is like water. Pressure is voltage. Amperage is flow... (current) The pressure is there wether you use any current or not. What you need is a power supply that has enough current to do the task and operates at (or about at) the designed voltage. An example... The 1520 and 1530 will run just fine from a car battery. 13.5V to 14.2V (close enough) and 225A available. (although it will only draw about 2A Charlie Ford From: Charles Ford Date: Mon Dec 10, 2001 9:21am Subject: Re: 1520 Sir: Actual examination of a high capacity battery provides us some additional information. There are nine (9) high density NiCd cells in series. The average output of a high density NiCd 1.35V. So 12.15 is the actual average output. But it is more important to know there are 9 cells. :-) These cells are size B (like a small C) three rows of three will almost fit across the bottom of the pod bay. Inside the battery pack they are stacked with the middle row high so that the width of the battery is narrow enough to fit. You should nave no problem modifying an old power supply housing to make a battery. From: Shawn Crossland Date: Thu Dec 27, 2001 11:25am Subject: Re: exploring my 1520 What's your name again? If I can't remember someone's name, I call them "Bob." So Bob, For conf1520.exe do a 'conf1520 /?' That will show you the list of commands. It will also show most of the options. IIRC, you can also do 'conf1520 ?' Stacker is an older, 3rd party software program that about doubles the hard drive space. It has it's own colorful history, but I won't bore you with the details. It generally works, but some people had problems with it. Personally, it always worked for me. If Stacker was installed on that HD, then here is annother partition of the drive that DOS isn't able to read. To see if there is a stacker partition, run chkdsk (for DOS 5.0) or scandisk and see the size of the drive. Then go to the root (C:\) and then do a DIR and see what the size is. They should be roughly the same. If they are are not by several megabytes, then Stacker is probably installed. To automatically see the Stacker partition, it has to be "mounted." I think you can mount "on the fly" by running stacker.exe in the stacker directory (if it is still there). Usually, there is a line in the autoexec.bat and config.sys files that loads stacker on boot up. TO get into the 1520, yes, the two screws are the starting point. Remove the screws and slide the cover torwards the rear of the unit. You can change hard drives, but the BIOS on "offically" recognizes 3 hard drives. I do not have the list of the 3 in front of me. But, if you want it to "see" another drive, the BIOS has to be edited. There is a post on Rob's GRiD board at www.pd.com. Whatever battery you get, be sure it *has* been rebuilt or re-manufactured. Ni-Cad's only last about 5 to 7 (sometime 10) years. Since the 1520's were build in the 1985 timeframe, you'll be hard pressed finding a good original battery. $58 seems like a good price...a little too good. Good luck, Bob, on the 1520 and keep us posted. :-) -Shawn From: Charles Ford Date: Sat Dec 29, 2001 10:41pm Subject: Re: Re: exploring my 1520 At 03:31 AM 12/30/01 +0000, you wrote: > Thanx, "conf1520 ?" works fine, but when I tried some of the >modifications it told me that they weren't implemented on my system. >Others worked briefly but didn't stay...It'll take some playing >around. > I don't think stacker is really there, config.sys and auto exec >refer to excel but I don't see that either. > Actually I think 5 yr. is optimistic for a NiCd. This would explain the settings not saying in place. Have you figured out how to open it yet? Just under the LEDs on the keyboard there is a lithium battery. Cheers!
