EXTENDED RANGE FOR THE WMLS11B

This is posted in response to a discussion from 2007 regarding ways to bring sound from the WMLS11B to remote locations. This item does NOT deal with extending the wireless / WiFi range of the WMLS11B, which can best be done by installing a better antenna on your wireless access point or router.

Within a home or office, distributing the audio from a WMLS11B can easily be done by connecting the audio outputs or optical link from the WMLS11B to a suitably equipped amplifier or receiver, such as the typical home theater or stereo receiver most WMLS11B owners already have. From the receiver, the speaker wiring can be extended to any sort of speaker, from in-wall or ceiling speakers to waterproof deck or bathroom speakers or common bookshelf speakers. Amplifier power and speaker impedance must be carefully considered, but in most cases a receiver with "A" and "B" speaker connections can safely operate a pair of remote speakers almost anywhere within the normal home.

However, using the above method requires a receiver, additional speakers, speaker cable and potentially complex installation.

There is a better way.

By attaching the audio outputs of the WMLS11B to a small FM stereo transmitter, anything your WMLS11B can play will be simultaneously available to any FM radio within the transmitter's range. This includes the FM receiver in your living room, the FM-equipped Home Theater receiver, any portable "boom box" with FM capability, even battery-powered FM radio headsets which can be worn while tending the garden, mowing the lawn or simply listening privately. Connecting the FM transmitter couldn't be easier -- just add a pair of "RCA - Y" cables between the WMLS11B console and its attached speakers, then connect the extra jack on each "Y" cable to your transmitter.

There are a variety of FM stereo transmitters on the market today, but of those which are suitable (and legal) for unlicensed home or office use, most of the cheaper models are disappointing in audio quality, range or both. Of those which provide satisfactory results, the best are those available from Ramsey, Crane, and TAW Global. Each of these companies offers transmitters which provide the maximum power level permitted by the FCC, and all produce excellent products, but in testing the TAW Global transmitter provided the best range: the highest stereo quality at the greatest distance, an area totaling over 70,000 square feet of coverage.

The TAW Global transmitter includes two audio adapter cables, home, automobile and USB power adapters, and can even be powered from internal AAA batteries for totally portable use. Of course the TAW transmitter works with many devices besides the WMLS11B -- for example, it can broadcast from an iPod or other MP3 player to your car radio, or from a portable CD player to multiple radios placed around an office or store. But using this transmitter with your WMLS11B may be your favorite application.
