Un Bricking: The Blue-Screen-FAQ (This will be updated as time permits, this is only a start.) From Message # 3389 April 1, 2008 - from Matt Burkhard Blue Screen, Unit Bricked, Almost Did Not Escape Being a Doorstop -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I bought a used unit from ebay and it came to me bricked. When you plugged the unit into power, the screen would turn blue w/o any text on it. Unlike a normal unit, where the power button flashes and it boots up with the Linksys logo, this one would have the power light on right away (no blinking) and the screen was just a blank blue. How I fixed it... Hooked up the unit to my network via a router/switch (not wireless) Used the OEM setup disk and it (the Linksys app) saw the unit but said it was in download mode and that it would not do anything. Then I used the BridgeCo app and it saw it and said it had no firmware, so I tried to flash to the latest version and it said the unit was not supported. I then used the BridgeCo app to flash to the old FW V1.09 (Linksys built) and it worked. I then re-flashed to FW V2.3.6 (vTunner built)and that worked too. So long story short, don't give up, and tenacity sure helps! Backgorund/history... Unpacked unit, plugged it in and right off the bat, I got the bluescreen with no text. Tried to hard reset it and it never cycled. Tired the hold the reset button down for 30sec, release and unplug from power and still would not boot. Tired to power up whilst holding the reset button then the screen was off, but it would not turn on. Tried the BridgeCo app and the app could not locate the unit. Tried it on my router/switch and directly hooked to my PC (Use the "X" and "II" switch). Still no joy... Tried the OEM setup utility and it would see the unit, but claimed it was in download mode and would not let me do anything. I then ran the BridgeCo app again and this time it saw the unit (yea !!!). Tried to flash to 2.3.5 and the BridgeCo app said it was not a compatible device. Figured what the heck and tried 1.09 and the app liked it, as well as the unit. I then flashed to 2.0.5 and it worked, but the BridgeCo app locked up at the end (the WMLS11B was fine). Had to kill the app via task manager. Tried it again and same result. So then I hard set the WMLS11B and tried a third time and it finished just fine. All three times, the WMLS11B was fine and worked, it was just that I didn't like the BridgeCo app not closing right. I was worried that some block of code may be wrong on the unit and it was locked up in some sort of checksum check. After it all worked, I then flashed to 2.3.6 and went to vTuuner (linksysradio) and paid for super tuner as my way of saying thank you to them for the killer firmware that w/o I would not be able to use WMC (Windows Media Connect). I hope this helps someone else too. Regards, Matt ========================================= The LONGER HOLD DOWN BUTTON METHOD! ========================================= From Message # 4114 04 October 2008 From: "Mike" Subject:Re: Bad flash? Cant get it to do anything other then light up in the back. I had a similar problem when I got mine as well. My problem was that I tried it via wireless AND I tried to use the updated file for a WMLS11B... but I have a WML11B (no "S")... I had to unplug it, hold the reset down for at least a full minute if not longer, wait another full minute or two, then plug it back in. The screen was still garbled but the firmware update utility saw the unit and allowed me to update the flash for my unit. The same flash utility sees both models but I had to make sure I used the latest version for the WML11B (without the "S") as they are 2 different firmware types. Never had a problem since and screen was fixed with updated flash. Mike
